‘Build riches in Heaven’

Updated: Jul 11, 2018

Last year, my wife and I had to go to Zambia on a mission trip. We decided to go a couple of weeks early so that we could spend some quality time together at the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Amanda, my wife, loves shopping. She could spend a whole day going from shop to shop buying things that we would probably never see again. I had to stress to her that we had zero space left in the cases so there would be no way we could take anything home with us. This had to be a trip where we would just enjoy the moment because anything purchased for later, would be banned from the airport.

If Amanda had spent all of her time on this trip shopping, and had bought an endless list of clothes, accessories, ornaments and souvenirs; what would you think? You would think that she was being foolish. Why? Because she would only be able to hold onto those items for a maximum of a few weeks and then it would have to be left at the airport.

In the same way, life is extremely short and when we die, we will take nothing with us to heaven.

“For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.” 1 Timothy 6:7

When I see people building businesses in order to accumulate a large net worth to sit on, but have no sense of eternity, it makes me sad. This earth, as we know it, is just a glimpse of our eternity. It is insane how we spend so much time worrying about such a tiny piece of cake.

“You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:14

There is nothing wrong with building up a good life on earth, but if you spend more time planning life on earth than life in heaven, you need to get your priorities right. Jesus says,

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves, treasures in heaven where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
