1. Why Is There A Housing Shortage In The UK?: Growing Demand!
The housing shortage comes down to supply and demand. If demand rises, but supply doesn’t, prices go up.
There is an increased demand for housing due to high levels of net migration. Net migration is the number of people moving to a country, minus the number of people who leave.
This is fine, it shows we are a popular country. More people want to live in the UK, because it is a great place to work, and raise a family. However, this means we need to build more houses quickly, and that isn’t happening!
2. Why Is There A Housing Shortage In The UK?: A System That Holds Developers Back!
So with a shortage of homes, surely the government is making it easier for developers? Surely they are encouraging both large firms, and small businesses, to build more homes? Unfortunately not!
The government have done very little to make getting planning permission easier, and continue to impose a huge tax burden on developers!
If we are going to build enough homes to meet the increasing demand, the government needs to get out of the way of developers. It is time for planning rules to be simplified, and taxes to be lessened. That will help to solve the housing shortage fast!
3. Why Is There A Housing Shortage In The UK?: Anti-Property Investor Sentiment!
That said, it isn’t just laws and regulations! It is also public and political sentiment. If we want more people to get into property development, we need to remove the stigma around property investment.
Landlords and developers help to bring more housing stock into use. Whether it is building a house, or refurbishing an uninhabitable property, property investors help to reduce the housing shortage in the UK.
Property investors should be championed, rather than criticised. That will mean more people will be encouraged to join the industry, and we can increase the number of homes available to the public!
