1. Things To Avoid When Buying A House: Sloped Driveways!
Sloped driveways make it harder for young children and the elderly. It may not be a problem for you, but it may be an issue for a future purchaser.
2. Unsafe Areas!
Finding out if an area is unsafe can be hard. Areas with large populations also have a higher crime rate, but it doesn’t necessarily make them unsafe areas. My advice is to visit the area at night, and walk around. If you feel unsafe, don’t buy!
3. Things To Avoid When Buying A House: Fake Rooms!
Sometimes lofts have been converted without planning permission, other times ‘bedrooms’ require walking through another bedroom to access them. Don’t be fooled by these fake rooms.
4. Spiral Staircases!
While they can look nice, they can also be a safety issue for families. Even if you like them, it will put off many future buyers.
5. Things To Avoid When Buying A House: Non-Standard Construction!
If a property is non-standard construction, you won’t be able to get a regular mortgage on it. Even if you are buying it for cash, it will be difficult to sell later.
6. Electricity Pylons!
If the property has an electricity pylon in the garden, that is a massive red flag. Many people believe they are a health risk, and they are an eyesore.
7. Things To Avoid When Buying A House: Pools And Water Features!
While having a pool or water feature may seem like a great thing, they are costly to maintain. Some buyers avoid them, so it can make a property hard to sell in the UK.
8. Private Roads!
If a property is on a private road, this can be a problem. Because private roads are maintained by the residents, they can end up in a very poor state of repair.
9. Things To Avoid When Buying A House: Thatched Roofs!
Thatched roofs look great, but they are very costly to maintain. They also push insurance rates up massively.
10. Poor-Quality New Builds!
New build properties sometimes come with issues you wouldn’t expect. Make sure to look into the reputation of the developer before you consider buying.
